Royal Blue Four-Piece Mitt and Trivet Set

Royal blue is the colour in this range that refuses to blend in, and a four-piece set is where that pays off twice. The mitts are findable on a cluttered counter, and the trivets are visible enough that you put the pan on the trivet rather than beside it. Two 13.7-inch mitts, two matching trivets.

Trivets get ignored when they are the same colour as the worktop. That sounds like a small thing until it is a heavy cast-iron pan set down on bare stone because the grey mat was invisible next to it. A saturated blue mat reads as an object, and objects get used.

The mitts are moulded BPA-free silicone with a ridged palm and a quilted cotton liner: silicone for the sealed barrier and the grip, cotton for the insulation. The trivets are the same silicone in flat form. Both parts share the property that matters most in a kitchen, which is that neither absorbs water, steam or spilled stock.

That non-absorbency is what makes the set easy to look after. Whatever ends up on a trivet after a roast comes off under a soapy cloth rather than setting into a weave, and the mitts take a machine cycle when the lining needs a real wash rather than a wipe.
