Gray Long-Cuff Silicone Mitts

Mid-grey is the colour you choose when you would rather the mitt did not announce itself. It sits quietly next to stainless steel, concrete, white cabinetry and pale wood alike, and it is dark enough that ordinary cooking marks do not read as stains. The build is the standard 13.7-inch silicone mitt with a quilted cotton liner.

The moulded silicone outer carries a ridged texture across the palm and fingers. This is the part that separates a working mitt from a decorative one: friction. A hot ceramic dish with a glazed base will slide out of a smooth glove, and the ridges are there to stop it before your reflexes have to.

Inside, quilted cotton does the insulating and provides the cushioning that makes the mitt wearable for a full baking session. The two materials are chosen for opposite reasons and the mitt needs both. Silicone gives you a surface nothing soaks through; cotton gives you the thickness that keeps the heat at arm’s length.

Grey also happens to be forgiving in the specific way kitchens require. It does not go grubby-looking the way cream does, and it does not show the pale heat-marks that eventually appear on black silicone near the thumb. Cleaning is straightforward: soapy water on the shell, machine wash for the pair when the liner needs it.
