Canyon Red Long-Cuff Silicone Mitts

This is the shorter sibling of the extra-long canyon red mitt, in the same muted brick tone. Thirteen and seven-tenths inches of cuff is the length that suits most home ovens: enough to keep a rack off your forearm, not so much that putting the mitt on becomes a two-handed operation while something burns.

The colour is a soft red with brown in it, closer to unglazed terracotta than to a pillar box. In a kitchen with wood, brass or warm stone it belongs; against cool grey and steel it deliberately does not blend, which is useful when you want to find the mitt fast. It also hides the tomato and paprika stains that ruin pale liners.

The shell is BPA-free moulded silicone, ridged across the palm and fingertips so that it grips rather than slides. Inside is a quilted cotton liner. The pairing matters: silicone alone would feel airless and conduct too quickly, cotton alone would drink up any moisture it touched. Together you get a barrier that also insulates.

Steam is the failure mode of a fabric mitt, and this design removes it. A sealed silicone surface gives spilled stock and lifted-lid steam nowhere to travel, so the moment you dread when draining a pot loses its edge. Cleaning follows from the same property: soapy water wipes the outside, and the pair goes in the machine when the lining wants it.
