Aqua and Black Extra-Long Silicone Mitts

This is the only pair in the range that puts the colour and the wear surface in different places, and the logic is sound. The back of the mitt, which is what you see, is aqua. The palm and fingers, which are what meet the pan, are black. You get a mitt you can spot on a counter and a grip surface that never looks used.

The dark palm is not a styling choice. That is the area that collects scorch marks from grill bars, grey polish from cast iron and the dark film that comes off a roasting tin, and on a light mitt it turns shabby within a month. Keeping it black means the pair looks the same after a season of use as it did new, while the aqua back stays clean because nothing touches it.

The cuff is the longer 14.7-inch length, so the forearm is covered rather than just the wrist. Combined with the textured silicone grip on the palm, this is the configuration for heavy, awkward, deep-set loads: a full roasting tin at the back of the oven, a Dutch oven coming off a low shelf, a tray of anything with liquid in it.

Underneath both colours the construction is the same moulded BPA-free silicone shell over a quilted cotton liner. The shell is waterproof, which is what stops steam off a lifted lid becoming a burn, and the liner is what makes the mitt insulate and stay comfortable. Wipe the outside, machine wash the pair when the lining needs it.
